By returning to a basic but often forgotten question in education - “Where are you?” - this paper puts the fostering task of teachers at the centre of attention. It is argued that some sort of precision regarding the school’s location and place is necessary if we wish to discuss the questions that are central to this paper: How should teachers foster common values in a time when the possibilities for creating commonalities seem to have eroded? And, how do teachers find authority and take responsibility for this task, not as (private) family members or as (public) politicians, but as (school) teachers?
