'The Meaning of the Mark: Exploring the nature of literacy in letters, numbers and beyond', Harriet Pattison
A common educational understanding of reading is that reading is the decoding of written symbols into speech. This talk takes an alternative perspective, exploring the view that the written word is a semiotic system co-existing with and comparable to other visual literacies in the creation of meaning. Placing reading and writing within the wider perspective of the relationship between symbols and meaning I consider the examples of writing, numerical notation and art; their similarities and differences as purveyors of meaning. In doing so pedagogical questions are raised about why we present our most common forms of symbolism in such different ways and the consequences for learning of these presentations.
