We are pleased to welcome Ed Podesta from Leeds Trinity University, who will be speaking on the subject of E.D. Hirsch's (1988) Cultural Literacy. Titled ‘What Every American Needs to Know - a solution without a philosophy?’, Ed offers a critique of this prominent figure in American education and whose notion of core knowledge has taken root within the English education system.

Ed has held a variety of difference roles in secondary schools and universities. Describing himself as a practitioner-researcher, Ed is currently senior lecturer and Academic Group Lead for Post Grad ITE at Leeds Trinity University. He also has been a history teacher and head of department at a secondary school, a PGCE tutor at the University of Oxford, and delivered Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for school middle managers. As well as textbook writing, he has worked with OCR on their new GCSE specification for AQA and Edexcel. In conjunction with Ed’s interest in teaching, he has been blogging about history at the excellent www.onedamnthing.org.uk

The seminar will take place in room LC1-28. This is located on Floor 1 of the Andrew Kean Learning Centre (the library) which has a separate entrance very close to the main university building. All floors are served by a lift, and the main entrance is at ground level. There will be refreshments from 5.00pm, with the seminar starting at 5.30pm, and finishing at 7.00pm.
