Competencies, Bildung and Education

5.30-7.15 pm

This paper compares and contrasts two general approaches to education: competence based education, which is very popular and dominant nowadays, and Bildung based education, which relies on the German notion of Bildung (or formation). The first approach is atomistic, assessment-oriented and fits perfectly within a view of education that marries neoliberal logics. The second approach is instead holistic, teaching-oriented and in line with a neo-humanist vision of education. By analysing their respective advantages and disadvantages, we suggest merging these two approaches into one. Our presentation is based on a work in progress monograph.
