Paul Standish (UCL IOE)
Coming into the world, coming into language, reading the world

What is it to be in the world? What do we mean by “world”? considering the way the very young child comes into
language and so much else. They can be fruitfully extended with reference to how our relation to language later
develops, not least through learning to read. My wide-ranging presentation will show connections between what
may seem disparate matters, especially through emphasising the nature and importance of human expression.

Paul Standish is Professor and Head of the Centre for Philosophy of Education at UCL IOE. He has extensive
teaching experience in schools, colleges and universities, and his research reflects that range. He is the author or
editor of some twenty books. He is President of the Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain and Co-
Editor of the Journal of Philosophy of Education.
