AI tutors and education’s civic mission
Dr Tim Fowler, Associate Professor in Political Theory, University of Bristol
This presentation examines the implications of what are known as ‘AI tutors’ for citizenship education. I argue that their widespread adoption risks undermining the aims and practices of democratic education-the process by which children become citizens. The paper highlights why current approaches risk obscuring the democratic stakes of AI-driven education.
Tim Fowler is Associate Professor in political philosophy at the University of Bristol. He works on a variety of topics in family ethics and the philosophy of education, in particular on the rights of parents to influence their children’s values and on children’s place in democratic societies.
