Winchester Branch Seminar

Valuing Dis/agreement in Communities of Philosophical Enquiry
A Winchester International Advanced P4C Webinar

Joanna Haynes, Magda Costa Carvalho, Claire Cassidy and Rose-Anne Reynolds will make a presentation based on their recent BERA funded research project. The project explored teacher educators’ perspectives on valuing dis/agreement in education, and their preparedness to enable dis/agreement. Chantal Mouffe’s (2005) exposition of agonistic politics and the sharper edges of democracy, and Susan Bickford’s (1996) discussion of the dissonance of democracy enriched our thinking on matters of dis/agreement. The research process was shaped by the methodology of communities of philosophical enquiry and involved workshops in the universities of Cape Town, the Azores, Strathclyde and Plymouth. Participants were invited to explore questions related to their associations with dis/agreement; their perspectives on its place in teacher education; their experiences of dis/agreement in classes; and their approaches to its enablement in different settings. In the seminar, the presenters will share their approach to the workshops and some of the themes that emerged from the project.

The seminar, chaired Patricia Hannam, Honorary Research Fellow University of Exeter, will consist of presentations and co-facilitated activities and discussions, including smaller break-out groups, all held within the spirit of the Community of Enquiry. Costs: There are no charges. We ask you to commit to attending the whole event. Venue: This meeting will be held virtually via TEAMS.
