F.D.E. Schleiermacher ‘Outlines of the Art of Education’
A close reading Workshop
led by Dr Pádraig Hogan, National University of Ireland, Maynooth, & Dr Karsten Kenklies, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow/ Scotland
Friedrich Daniel Ernst Schleiermacher is considered to be one of the founding fathers of the continental academic discipline of Education Studies. In several lectures he explored the fundamental structures of a theory of Education and its relation to educational practice. While Schleiermacher was always known as a philosopher or theologist in the Anglophone world, his reflections on pedagogy were largely unknown due to a lack of translations – until the introduction to his lectures of 1826 saw the light in form of an English translation prepared by Prof Norm Friesen and Dr Karsten Kenklies.
The workshop will engage in a close-reading discussion of this text. Structured through short inputs by selected participants regarding specific topics of the book, the format will be one of a free discussion.
The participation is free; please organise your own travel, food, and accomodation if so needed. However, it will be assumed all participants have read the whole text before attending and are willing to contribute actively to the discussions.
The text is available in printed form or as e-book here: https://www.peterlang.com/document/125695
