Worldviews in the RE Classroom: Examining the Controversy
Professor Trevor Cooling, National Institute for Christian Education Research, Canterbury Christ Church University

5-6.30pm

In 2018, the Commission on RE (CoRE) published a report that included the recommendation that worldview(s) should be a major focus in school RE. This created quite a controversy which is ongoing, particularly as represented in the continuing publication of articles and books by academics. In this lecture I will present an analysis of this controversy from the perspective of someone who has been heavily involved in the debate and a supporter of the CoRE initiative. Whilst recognising important questions to be answered, I will argue that the strength of the initiative is that it offers a timely refreshing of the purpose of RE through a reassessment of our understanding of the nature of the knowledge that is the focus of the subject.
