Book launch for David Turner (Beijing Normal University), Comparative Education: A field in discussion, with Qing Gu (UCL IOE) and Tejendra Pherali (UCL IOE)
5.30-7.15 pm
David Turner will briefly introduce the book, and outline some of the main themes, most importantly that we each see the world through the filter of our own culture/language, and that, in any classification, intragroup variation is much greater than intergroup variation. This is of particular importance when grouping people according to their nationality, language or religion. Qing Gu and Tejendra Pherali will respond with their reactions to the book, followed by more general discussion.
David Turner is Professor Emeritus at the University of South Wales and Professor in International and Comparative Education, Beijing Normal University. His publications include Quality in Higher Education (2012) and Theory and Practice of Education (2007), and numerous articles. Originally from Nepal, Tejendra Pherali (UCL) studied in Australia, Nepal, the UK, and the US. He is Chair of the British Association for International and Comparative Education (BAICE) and chairs the Editorial Board of Compare. Qing Gu, Director of the UCL Centre for Educational Leadership, is a Fellow of the RSA and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.
