I provide a new answer to the old question of what the proper final ends of a public university are. I first point out that the central aims of higher education are often construed in terms of what would advance domestic justice, peppered with suggestions of individualist aims such as promoting student autonomy or knowledge for its own sake. Appealing to African ideas that are shown to have wide appeal, I argue that there are two important social aims beyond these, namely, promoting a certain kind of global justice, on the one hand, and relationships at the domestic level, on the other.
Thaddeus Metz is particularly known for having developed a moral principle informed by the African philosophical tradition, put it into critical comparison with East Asian and Western ethics, and applied it to various controversies. Articles of his relating to education have appeared in journals such as the Journal of Moral Education, the Journal of Philosophy of Education, Studies in Philosophy and Education, and Educational Philosophy and Theory. Prospect Magazine recently designated Metz one of ‘The World’s Top 50 Thinkers’ for bringing African ideas to global audiences. Metz is currently Professor of Philosophy at the University of Pretoria in South Africa.
