The insistent call to decolonize higher education forms the starting point of this paper. After sketching the landscape from which this call draws its relevance and different responses that have been formulated, I draw on Isabelle Stengers’ ecology of practices and the actual practice of the Palestinian, decolonial university ‘Campus in Camps’ to propose the concept of an ecology of study as another way of imagining the university. The paper does not aim at final answers, but rather seeks to make a situated story, that of Campus in Camps, come to bear on our thinking about decolonization in higher education.
Hans Schildermans is a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Foundations of Education (University of Vienna). He is the author of Experiments in Decolonizing the University. Towards an Ecology of Study (Bloomsbury, 2021).
