One can describe human flourishing as the individual’s needs, potentials and ideals becoming clear and reach forms that are visible and appealing for the others and for oneself. My claim in this paper is that this understanding of human flourishing can best be elaborated on the ground of Hegel’s concept of Bildung. Hence, I attempt to reconstruct this concept, and the result of the reconstruction is that Bildung is a social process of transition of the individual from the natural to the conceptual realm. In this transition the individual’s needs, desires and ideals undergo a conceptual articulation, and so the self objectivizes itself in the world.

Krassimir Stojanov is Professor and Chair of Philosophy of Education and Educational Theory at the University of Eichstaett-Ingolstadt, Germany. The main topics of his research are educational justice, the concept of Bildung, and the Frankfurt School and its educational implications, among others. He is author of several books on these topics including Education, Self-Consciousness, and Social Action: Bildung as a Neo-Hegelian Concept (Routledge 2018).
