Trolley problems, genealogies, and moral education

Recent work in normative philosophy has revived the use of genealogy as a tool for understanding and evaluating concepts. In this talk, I consider whether this trend might shed new light on the use of other thought experiments in ethics, especially trolley problems and similar cases often maligned as mere intuition-pumps. In so doing I explore ways we might think about the value of both thought experiments and fictional genealogies as a tool of moral education.
