Muhammad Iqbal (1877-1938) is often read a Muslim apologetic, who used positions in German metaphysics to reinvent a Sufi-inflected understanding of the self. Instead of tracing the origins of these positions in his work, this talk will endeavor to work out his understanding of knowing through Imān. This mode of knowing was in his view the only appropriate way for a colonial Muslim subject to know the self and the world and thus prepare the ground to gain their freedom.

Monika Kirloskar-Steinbach is Professor of Philosophy at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, where she holds the chair in Diversifying Philosophy. Her research explores world philosophies, political philosophy, critical social epistemology, and cross-cultural philosophical inquiry, with a particular focus on diversifying the philosophical canon. She serves as the chief-editor of the Journal of World Philosophies, the Bloomsbury Introductions to World Philosophies, and the Bloomsbury Studies in World Philosophies series.
