‘Nearness and Distance in the Classroom: Exploring the Concept of Educational Attunement’
Dr Rowena Azada-Palacios

17:30pm – 19:00pm

In this session, Dr. Rowena Azada-Palacios (Ateneo de Manila University and London Metropolitan University) discusses a work in progress she has been undertaking with Ms Pamela Joy Mariano Capistrano (Ateneo de Manila University and the University of Namur) on the concept of educational attunement. In their work, Azada-Palacios and Capistrano explore the possibilities and limitations of such a concept as a way of framing the in-classroom relationship between the teacher and students, identifying the features that would distinguish an educationally attuned approach to teaching. They also seek to uncover the limitations of such a framing: the danger that it may lead to transgressions of professional boundaries, exploitations of teachers’ vulnerabilities, or violations of the principle of fairness in the classroom. To address these limitations, the authors examine how bell hooks’ account of loving strangers and Emmanuel Levinas’ account of responsibility indicate a way to frame the delicate balance required between the nearness of educational attunement and the distance of educational structures and systems.

Dr.Rowena Azada-Palacios is an assistant professor of philosophy at Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines and an associate lecturer of education at London Metropolitan University. Rowena’s doctoral research, completed at the UCL Institute of Education in 2021, proposed a reimagination of the teaching of national identity in post-colonial contexts. Her research interests include continental philosophy, anti-colonial political thought, and the intersections of these with education.
